2D TUTORIAL: Simulating Soft Lens Effects in rendered 3D images

Original image as rendered with POVray.

This tutorial is written with steps designed for Corel PhotoPaint. However the same technique is also applicable
to PhotoShop and GIMP.



Step 1

Create a duplicate of the original image

Next, go to Image , Transform and apply Threshold to the duplicated image of the original..
You should get something similar to the image on the right (>>>>).

Step 2

Go to Filters, Blur and Apply Gaussian Blur to the duplicate
You should get something similar to the image on the right (>>>>).

Step 3

Go to Image, Adjust, Brightness-Contrast-Intensity to manipulate the duplicate until the desired result is achieved..
You should get something similar to the image on the right (>>>>).





Next, we need to copy the edited duplicate. Apply Select All to the duplicate, go to Edit and select Copy.

Step 4

Select all of the original image.

Next, go to Edit, Paste, Paste into selection...
This will place the copied manipulated duplicate in a new layer that is accurately aligned with the original image

Step 5

On the Layer Rollup, change Merge Mode to Screen....

Where necessary, adjust the opacity of the Top layer to achieve the right balance.

Flatten and combine the layers.

The Final Image


The final image now have a ' classier' look as compared to the original, complete with soft atmospheric mood... If you do not have a 2D image editing program you can download the GIMP for free (which is almost as powerful as PhotoShop !!!) from www.gimp.org
