Wilderness survival: Some edible South-east Asian plants (Part One)

Category: Wilderness Survival

South East Asia is a sub-region of Asia. It consists of the countries that are geographically south of China, east of India, and north of Australia. It is also home to many flora. South East Asia have lush tropical forests.

The followings are some common edible plants and fruits found in the regions. They should be fairly easy to spot in vegetated areas.

Banana

A banana is a beneficial fruit. It can supply a person sustained and substantial boost of energy. It has been found that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. Fructose, sucrose and glucose are all found in the banana.

Below is a picture of banana trees.

Papaya

The picture on the right shows a papaya tree. It is a common sight in Southeast asia. The ripe edible fruit can be eaten raw, without the skin or seeds. The ripe papaya fruit meat is soft and sweet.

Please take note that the papaya is known to release a latex fluid when it is not quite ripe. This latex can cause irritation and provoke allergic reaction in some people.
