Portrait Photography is one of the most common usage for a camera. A good portrait often leave an impression or impact on the viewer. Therefore, a successful portrait can be a dramatic statement about the subject or person in the picture. For a beginner, trying to capture the natural expressions of the subject and at the same time posing him or her nicely can be a challenge.

Here are some tips for taking great portraits

1. Eyes are windows of the soul

2. Fill a sizeable part of the photo with the Subject

Under most circumstance, it is better to have a close up view of a person than to include the entire person's body in the picture. Focus mainly on the head of the person.

3. Keep the surrounding clutter free.

In Portrait photography, the main focus of the picture should be the person. By keeping the surrounding background clutter free, focus will naturally be directed to the person or subject. A clean and less-distracting background is ideal. A blank room or a studio backdrop can be used.

4. Diffuse or blur the background

If you are using a point and shoot camera, set the setting icon to portrait mode. If you are using a camera with more controls such as SLR or DSLR, set the Depth of Field narrow so that focus range is mainly on the subject. This will defuse and blur off the surrounding that are not on focus. You can do so by using a larger aperture setting. Aperture settings are indicated as F-stop numbers. A larger aperture is indicated by smaller F-stop numbers such as F/3.5 , F/5.6. On the other hand, large F-stop number such as F/22 with keep pretty much everything in the pictute sharp.

5. Understand your Subject

Developing a good understanding of human nature is a big advantage in Portrait Photography. Developing this skill often requires having conversations with the subject. This may includes things like finding out about his or her interests, inclinations and so on so forth. In the process, you can create some pleasant excitements which will help in bringing out the natural personality of your Subject.
