Photography - Nature and Wildlife Photography Tips

Category: Photography

Nature and Wildlife Photography is an activity that is interesting and engaging. However, it is a little bit different from the typical types of photography. This is because your subjects are not human beings and therefore their behaviours may not conform to your expectations. So when attempting to take good pictures of Wildlife, we need to factor in the considerations of animal behaviours.

Here are some tips for taking great pictures of Nature and Wildlife.

Use the advantages of zoom and telephoto lens.

Use zooming to take closer views of an animal without physically closing in on the animal. This will allow the animals to be natural and not be startled by your presence. For photographing sizeable animals, lenses 300mm and bigger is required. For photographing birds, a 600 mm lens may be more suitable.

Be patience. Find a nice spot and stay hidden.

You may firstly need to scout the area where you intend to photograph the animals. To predict their patterns and positions, observe their movements. Decide on the best possible place to position yourself. Once done try to stay hidden from the animals' knowledge of your presence. This will prevent startling the animals. Taking animal shots require alot of patience and some luck.

Animals can be found where sustanance is .

Wildlife often be found where the sustanance and resources reside. They can be found where food, water and shelter is.

Avoid using flash.

Flash scares animals. Because of that, you will only be able to take one shot of the animal before it runs aways, if flash is used.

Get multiple shots of moving animals

As some animals are always on the move, get multiple shots. This will ensure that you have at least a few shots to select instead of one. Sometimes you will get nicer shots than the first one that you have taken. If your camera supports auto-bracketing, it is good to use the feature as well.

Dome Hides

Under certain circumstances, you may want to construct a dome hide. Dome hides are basically tents that are camouflaged to blend with the surrounding. The picture on the right is a typical dome hide where you can buy from specialised hiking and photography related shops. A dome hide will conceal you very well, leaving only the camera lens exposed.
