| Rules of thirds This is a very important rule for composition. It is popularly regarded as important for making a photograph more aesthetically pleasing and professional-looking. The Rule of thirds establishs that the frame of an image can be divided into three equal vertical portions and three equal horizontal portions. Therefore there are nine parts altogether. See the picture directly below.
The positions where the lines intersect are considered as ideal spots for a point of interest or subject. By positioning your main subject on those places, more focus and interest are created. The picture above shows the tree (subject) being placed on one of the ideal spot. The intersection points can also work if there is more than one main subject in the photo.
Rules of leading lines Leading lines within a frame can be any lines such
as tracks, bridge, roads, streams and tree branches. The leading lines
rule can be used to lead the eye towards the the main subject. This
will add a nice touch to any composition. However, leading lines are
not always readily available. We may have to use some insight and
creativity to derive these leading lines.
