Wilderness Survival - Maintaining a fire

For wilderness situation, once a fire has been started, it has to be maintained or it will quickly burn itself out.

The material needed to prevent that is known as Kindling. Kindling feeds the fire to prevent it from dying too soon.

 

Kindling should ideally consists of small, dry and thin twigs that are not thicker than pencils. Kindling must be dry.

Next the fire must be maintained. The material needed to maintain the fire is known as Fuel.

There following are some suitable fuels:

1. Coal

2. Peat

3. large wood or logs

4. animal dung

water collection
