How to Extend The Battery Life Of Your Digital Camera .........

Category: Photography

Digital cameras are real energy consumption hogs. They consume battery power like nobody's business. Because of this, effective management of battery power is quite important when it comes to digital photography.

The followings are some tips on extending the battery life.

1. Contrary to popular belief, turning off the power of the camera often is not really a good idea. This is because much energy is needed for the camera to turn on and off. This is moreso for cameras that has moving and retractable lens. Many digital cameras have a standby function that will save power while it is still on. This standby function usually just comes on automatically after a set amount of time. However, if your camera does not have a standby function then just do yourself a favour and leave it on.

2. Where possible turn off the LCD display screen of the camera. Use the viewfinder instead. Turning the LCD screen off will make a huge saving in terms of power usage.

What is the viewfinder? It is the "window opening" that allows the photographer to look through the camera in order to compose the scene.

3. If you are using rechargeable batteries, there are some tips to extending their lifespan.

Firstly, they should be re-charged only when they are completely empty of power. Rechargeable batteries are usually reliable for about 200-300 charge cycles. Once this figure is reached, the batteries will not retain charge anymore. However, charging them before they are completely emptied of power will significantly shorten their life span. This means that they will loss their power faster.
