How to making a Wind Chime

Category: household and domestic

Wind Chime adds a touch of elegance and fine sound tone to any home experience. Below are some general guidelines for making your own wind chime

Ideation and design development

You will first need to plan and design the windchime. The considerations are:

  • How the wind chime should look like.
  • What type of materials should be used. Materials such as bamboo, glass, copper pipes and even seashells can be used. Steel, aluminum and other hard metal pipes usually produce a sharp tone. Soft metals, such as copper, will make a more mellow sound than hard metals.
  • Where should it be placed.
  • How to secure the wind chime to the designated location

Collect the materials and tools required for the fabrication

The followings are required for making parts of a windchime:

  • A support ring or plattorm
  • A clapper made of wood or metal
  • Strings for securing
  • Pipes for producing the sound.

The following tools are required:

  • A pipe cutter such as a hacksaw
  • A clamp
  • A drill. Preferably a power drill.

The process of making the wind chime

1. Cut the pipes to length. Start by cutting the longest one first. If you are using a hacksaw, use a clamp to hold the pipe in place.

2. Test and evaluate the sound quality
Find the tone that is want you want. How do you do that? To do so, tap on the bottom of the cut pieces of pipes . If you do not like the sound, cut off small increments of the pipe from the bottom up. This will gradually modify the tone. The shorter the pipe, the higher the tone. Once a desired tone is reached, you may stop cutting.

3. Drill holes through one end of the pipes. Run the string through the holes. Support the design with a ring at the top.

Lastly, insert the clapper. You do so by suspending it with another length of string from the ring into the middle of the chimes. The clapper and chimes should be positioned such that the clapper will hit one chime or two chimes at a time.

Well, these are the steps for making a wind chime. Hope that it has been useful.
