GPU rendering … future of 3D ?

January 29th, 2010

Looking around the 3D arena, there seems to be some significant changes to the direction of development. It appears that more and more companies and even open-source sources are developing GPU based rendering engines and systems.

What is GPU? It stands for Graphics Processing Unit. It is usually found on the graphic card of the computer. It is a specialised processor that deals with 3D graphics processing.

Could this be the future direction for 3D renderer system? One thing is for sure, GPU based system will most likely be faster than the current way of rendering which rely mainly on the CPU. CPU stands for central processing unit.

Systems that are coming out that is following this direction includes Luxrender, Octane Renderer, Furry Ball. There are more systems are that not listed here. Some of these systems are based on unbiased renderers… for example the Octane Renderer.
